Page Planning

No matter which artist or graphic designer you want to work with, it’s always a good idea to have a plan.

What is it?

  • When you begin the process of hiring creative help, whether it is with ALL illustration & design, or another creative of your choosing, there are certain things that everyone involved will need to know to ensure a smooth process.

What does it do?

  • What size will the book be? How many pages will be needed to illustrate the story in the most effective and engaging way? What size, type, and placement should the illustrations be? The page plan answers all of these questions and provides a step-by-step plan that you can bring to your creative so that you may all confidently move forward.

Why Do I Need One?

  • In order to negotiate a fair price for the work ahead, you and your creative team need to know what needs to be done. Alternatively, if you are planning on doing things yourself, a page plan can save you time and hassle. Nothing feels worse than getting to the end of the long process of illustrating and designing a book just to find out the sizes are wrong, or the text won't fit.

How it works

  • Writing and editing your story is up to you (although I am happy to assist with proofreading). Once your manuscript is complete, that's when I can begin working my magic.

  • With your completed manuscript in hand, I will craft your page plan visually with illustration suggestions and information about size and placement. I will include the optimal book size and number of pages, including front and back matter.

  • With your page plan in hand you will now have all the knowledge you need to hire the perfect illustrator and graphic designer for your project. You will know sizes, number of pages and content prompts to inspire your artist. Use this plan as a guide, but always let your artist have a say in the creative direction of the illustrations themselves. They are the artist, after all, and their input can bring that extra bit of magic to your story.
